Chiapas has a southern coastline along the Pacific Ocean. Chiapas is known for the ancient Mayan ruins of Palenque, Yaxchilan, Bonampak, and Chinkultic. It is home to one of the largest indigenous populations in the country, with twelve federally recognized ethnicities.
