Ciudad Valles is a city and municipality in the state of San Luis Potosí, in eastern Mexico, in the Huasteca region (Huasteca Potosina), on the banks of the Tampaón River, also popularly known as Río Valles. Ciudad Valles is an important commercial, tourism, agricultural, and livestock center, with major sugar and cement industries located in the city. Its proximity to the Sierra del Abra-Tanchipa and to other municipalities of the Huasteca region makes it a key stop for travelers, thanks to its hotel infrastructure and tourism services. The area is known for ecotourism and for adventure sports such as kayaking and rappelling. Ciudad Valles is the third-largest, most populous, and one of the most important urban centers in the state of San Luis Potosí. Both Spanish and the Huastec (Huasteca) language are spoken in the region. It was the first municipality in the state of San Luis Potosí to be governed by an independent Municipal President.
