North Bali Indonesia

This area is far removed from the hectic pace that is so apparent in South Bali. During the Dutch colonial era, Singaraja—with its port and easy access from Java—was the administrative capital of the island. Traces of that history remain in its notably wide streets and the occasional old house that has kept the large gardens the Dutch enjoyed so much. Together, these features give Singaraja a feel and atmosphere unlike any other town or city in Bali. Lovina is the other part of the region frequently visited by tourists. The name “Lovina” was created in the 1950s specifically to promote tourism and refers to three traditional villages along a stretch of black-sand, palm-fringed coastline. Development here has been somewhat haphazard, but that only seems to add to its laid-back charm. Lovina is popular with visitors who want a beach vacation in Bali without the hectic pace of the resort areas in South Bali. Many visitors to the region arrive in their own rental car. It’s possible to rent both motorcycles and cars in Lovina, with Kalibukuk village being your best option. If you plan to simply enjoy the beaches and relaxed lifestyle in Lovina, walking is the easiest way to get around. Regular local bemos (minibuses) run along the coastal road between Singaraja and Lovina and beyond—just flag one down when you see it.
