Tabasco México

Tabasco, officially the Free and Sovereign State of Tabasco, is one of Mexico’s 32 federal entities. It is divided into 17 municipalities, and its capital city is Villahermosa. Located in the southeast of the country, it borders Campeche to the northeast, Veracruz to the west, Chiapas to the south, and Guatemala’s Petén department to the southeast. To the north, it has a coastline along the Gulf of Mexico. Most of the state is covered by rainforest because, unlike most other areas of Mexico, it receives abundant rainfall year-round. As a result, the territory is filled with small lakes, wetlands, and rivers. Tabasco is prone to severe flooding, such as the major event in 2007 that affected eighty percent of the state. It is also home to La Venta, a major site of the Olmec civilization, considered a cradle of later Mesoamerican cultures. Despite producing significant quantities of petroleum and natural gas, poverty remains a concern in the state.
