1. Mazatlán
Stay
About the destination: Mazatlán is a coastal city in the Mexican state of Sinaloa and the seat of the Mazatlán Municipality. It lies on the Pacific Ocean at 23°13′N 106°25′W, across from the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. The name Mazatlán comes from Nahuatl and means “place of deer.” The city was founded in 1531 by Spaniards and Indigenous settlers. In the mid-19th century, many German immigrants arrived and, together with local residents, helped develop Mazatlán into a major commercial seaport that supplied equipment to nearby gold and silver mines. Mazatlán was the capital of Sinaloa from 1859 to 1873. German influence can still be seen in the region’s banda music, which incorporates elements of Bavarian folk music, and in local industry; the Pacifico Brewery was founded here on March 14, 1900.
